More than a year after George Floyd’s killing focused attention on efforts to diversify newsrooms, the ability to measure real progress is proving elusive.
The News Leaders Association, a journalism trade group, extended the deadline for responses to its survey about employment practices at news organizations for two months, after expressing disappointment about how few are willing to reveal the diversity of their staffs.

Republican Gov. Mike Parson on Thursday condemned one of Missouri’s largest newspapers for exposing a flaw in a state database that allowed public access to thousands of teachers’ Social Security numbers, even though the paper held off from reporting about the flaw until after the state could fix it.

Social media is a great resource for marketing that should be automated as much as possible (using Buffer or a website plugin). In this case study, a community newspaper had 20,000 followers on Facebook, but no website. Launching its first site a few weeks ago was like building a town in 1850 with no connection to the transcontinental railroad. But by posting article links to the website on Facebook, the paper created an immediate channel from the audience it had been developing for years.

Jeremy L. Halbreich, chairman and CEO of Dallas-based AIM Media Management, has been named the 2021 recipient of the Inland Press Foundation Distinguished Service Award. Halbreich will receive the award at the annual meeting of America’s Newspapers on Oct. 18 in Colorado Springs.
