The Oak Ridger in Tennessee has announced that Publisher Darrell Richardson, an Anderson County native, will be leaving the company no later than Friday, April 3. The publisher’s position at Oak Ridge, and in other selected Gannett markets, has been eliminated.

A detailed memo outlines four basic goals set forth by Shaw Media in response to COVID-19, the most dramatic of which is the directive to employees to work from home if at all possible. “We said anyone who can work from home should work from home,” Rung said in an interview.

When researchers at Northwestern University’s Medill Local News Initiative searched for the key reasons readers decide to stay subscribers or add to churn statistics, they made some incongruous findings. Like the more pages someone reads, the more likely they are to churn.

“Judge Yelenosky strongly planted a flag for the public’s right to know with the decision,” said John Bussian, attorney for the Austin American-Statesman, following a ruling that the public has a right to see disciplinary records of University of Texas students accused of sex crimes. “And we hope that if the university appeals, that the judge’s decision will be quickly affirmed so the public can see the records.”

It is “ordinary” Americans — and not journalists — who make the most use of open meetings and freedom of information laws. Americans want to know what is going on in their public schools. They want to know how their town is spending money maintaining streets and sidewalks. They want to know how their property taxes compare to similar homes. They want to be in the room when a zoning change is proposed in their neighborhood.
Sunshine Week is a perfect opportunity to remind Americans that is it their money that produces information that belongs to them, and it is their elected and appointed officials who must make decisions in front of them and not behind closed doors.
