Legacy.com is delighted to announce that the company’s memorial tree program recently passed the significant milestone of 5,000,000 tree plantings.

Launched in 2019 in partnership with the Arbor Day Foundation, memorial trees purchased via a Legacy-partner newspaper obituary have improved the quality of life of communities across the globe by:

  • Revitalizing 27 forests
  • Sequestering 2,000,000 metric tons of C02
  • Preventing 176,000,000 gallons of water from runoff
  • Scrubbing 10,000 tons of air pollutants

To commemorate the achievement, Legacy.com staff joined with the Arbor Day Foundation and Chicago-nonprofit Openlands to plant trees on the campus of Chicago State University. The plantings featured climate-resilient species that are both native to the region and well-suited to withstand future warming trends.

“Trees clean our air, cool our cities and improve the lives of the people around them,” said Dan Lambe, chief executive of the Arbor Day Foundation. “Our partnership with Legacy helps communities around the world maximize the impact of their urban canopy and inspire more people to engage with nature in a meaningful way.”

The popular program reflects Legacy’s ongoing commitment to helping newspaper partners meet reader demand for impactful memorial options. “People want the chance to honor their loved ones with more than words,” says Legacy.com CEO Alan Press. “Planting a tree in a state or national forest serves as a long-lasting and powerful tribute that strengthens our planet for future generations. We’re proud to help our partners forge more and deeper connections to their readers and the communities they serve.”

And for the Legacy team who assisted in the live planting, the event offered the chance to experience the program’s power firsthand. “Now I can tell everyone I help with their memorial tree orders that I have actually planted for Legacy and the Arbor Day Foundation,” says Julie Schindler, manager of marketing sales and operations at Legacy. “Providing a beautiful, growing and breathing memorial is such a special and loving remembrance. We all benefit from this heartfelt gift.”
