Executive Editor Matthew Sauer announced Friday that he was departing the Sarasota (Florida) Herald-Tribune which he joined in 1993 as a county government reporter, and where he rose through the ranks to take the helm three years ago.

“It’s with the sense of pride in all those accomplishments that I am able to comfortably turn a new page in my own life,” Sauer wrote on Friday. “Today is my last day at the Herald-Tribune and I am so grateful to have worked with all of you.”

Hollis R. Towns, vice president of Local News initiatives at Gannett, said there will be a national search for a new editor. Wendy Fullerton Powell, who has been editor in Fort Myers/Naples, will serve as interim editor.
