Extra, extra, read all about the latest data on newspaper occupations! Oct. 6 was the beginning of National Newspaper Week, which recognizes newspapers and their employees who keep us informed about current events around the world and at home every week and some every day.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics from May 2023, about 98,960 people were employed in the newspaper publishing industry. The top three occupations employing the largest number of workers were news analysts, reporters and journalists; editors; and advertising sales agents. These three occupations accounted for 41 percent of the total newspaper employment.
The top three occupations earning the highest wages in this industry include general and operations managers ($113,280), producers and directors ($105,590), and market research analyst and marketing specialists ($76,430). The average annual wage of employees in the newspaper publishing industry was $60,750. Of the three largest occupations in this industry, editors ($71,400) had an above-average wage.
