Mary Mayer joins Star Tribune as senior vice president of consumer growth

Star Tribune continues assertive growth to strengthen local news in Minnesota


The Star Tribune Media Company, the largest news organization in the Midwest, today announced the addition of Mary Mayer to its executive staff as senior vice president of consumer growth. Mayer joins the media organization after spending the past five years at The Daily Beast building its subscription business from the ground up and leading the growth of all consumer products for the New York-based media company.

“Local journalism has never mattered more, and I’m so excited to be part of growing it in my home state,” said Mayer, who will be returning to Minnesota after working on the east coast for the past decade.

Prior to The Daily Beast, Mayer worked at startups Eight Sleep and Blue Apron in the subscription and ecommerce space, running point on driving users and revenue through digital marketing campaigns. She started her career as a digital media planner at various agencies, where she was able to hone her skills across a wide breadth of clients and platforms.

Mayer holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in marketing from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and also attended the University of Iowa. She plans to return to her home state of Minnesota later this year with her husband George and young children Stella and Freddie.

This hire continues a series of new strategic leadership role developments at the Star Tribune including a chief product officer as well as a new chief financial officer and vice president of communications and brand marketing.
