Help young children understand freedom of the press and democracy

Posted

Can a 9-year-old understand how press freedom protects democracy? We at Kid Scoop say “Absolutely!” Take a look at this Kid Scoop page for your newspaper.

These Kid Scoop activities are designed to teach children about freedom and democracy. Try them out with children you know.

We at Kid Scoop believe every day is World Press Freedom Day, not just on May 3 each year when we celebrate the First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States. Every day newspapers report the facts about its government, community, state and nation: that is freedom, that is democracy in action.

Reporters are trained to look, listen and ask questions to get all the facts. Their job is to write carefully so readers understand exactly the facts of what is happening. Through professional training and experience, reporters (journalists) keep freedom alive. Democracy requires freedom of the press.

Kid Scoop celebrates World Press Freedom Day. We salute the work of all newspapers shining the light of truth everywhere, every day.
