Developing and deploying AI responsibly: Elements of an effective legislative framework to regulate AI

On Tuesday, Sept. 12, Microsoft Vice Chair and President Brad Smith testified before a Senate Judiciary subcommittee for a hearing entitled “Oversight of A.I.: Legislating on Artificial Intelligence.” You can view the hearing here.

In his written testimony, Brad Smith addresses the principles that Microsoft believes should guide the development of legislation to advance safe, secure and trustworthy AI. He responds to the framework released by Senators Blumenthal and Hawley writing, “I believe this framework is a strong and positive step towards effectively regulating Artificial Intelligence. It reflects the urgency and speed needed to address this fast-moving technology, and it combines strong protection for the public with support for ongoing technology innovation.”
