Shareholders of New Media Investment Group and Gannett have approved New Media's $1.13 billion acquisition of Gannett. The deal is expected to close Tuesday, Nov. 19, "subject to the satisfaction of customary closing conditions," New Media said in a statement.

When I learned a few months ago that the boards of directors of SNPA and Inland had agreed to explore a potential merger, I immediately thought that it was a great idea that would add member value while better utilizing the organizations’ resources. It didn’t cross my mind then that I would become the new organization’s first CEO, but I am truly honored and thrilled to serve in that role.

The paper recounted two high-profile cases in recent years where citizens seeking to obtain public records were dragged into costly legal battles with government agencies and encouraged members of the public to attend a free open records workshop this week.
