Texas TikTok ban challenged by free-speech group

Lawsuit says the ban is unconstitutional and hinders academic freedom

Free-speech advocates and academics sued Texas over its TikTok ban, saying it violates the First Amendment rights of public-university faculty. 

The Knight First Amendment Institute at Columbia University filed the lawsuit Thursday on behalf of the Coalition for Independent Technology Research, a group of academics, journalists and researchers that study technology’s impact on society. It alleged the Texas ban on the popular social-media app for university faculty and other state employees is unconstitutional, infringes on academic freedom and inhibits research.
