Ryan Martin named executive editor of The Indianapolis Star

Posted

Gannett Co., Inc. (NYSE: GCI) and the USA TODAY Network have announced that Ryan Martin will join The Indianapolis Star as executive editor, effective Sept. 29. In his role, Martin will lead the Indianapolis Star’s mission of producing invigorating, impactful journalism, that both engages and informs the Indianapolis community through a multi-platform approach.

Martin previously served as managing editor for The Elkhart Truth, and most recently held the role as the deputy managing editor of Mirror Indy. Martin brings over 15 years of experience in journalism, including more than seven years at the Indianapolis Star as a digital news director and content coach and as an investigative reporter, where he earned the 2021 Pulitzer Prize for National Reporting for a story investigating K-9 units and damage inflicted by police dogs. Additionally, he reported on everything from an investigation that showed how a lack of enforcement from state regulators led to violence in local bars to an exposé on the scope of Indiana’s jail crisis.

“With deep connections to the Indianapolis community, Martin’s passion for his city and experience in local journalism aligns him with our mission of preserving vital reporting while championing innovative ways to meet our audience where they are,” said Gannett Media President Kristin Roberts. “Martin’s experience in newsroom leadership and audience growth at publications in northern and central Indiana makes him an obvious choice for the role of executive editor.”

Martin received an Associate of Arts from John A. Logan Community College, a Bachelor of Journalism from the University of Missouri and a Master of Business Administration from Washington University in St. Louis.

“I’m thrilled to be returning to the Indianapolis Star as its executive editor,” said Martin. “For more than 15 years, I’ve fought to safeguard local news, leading newsrooms of various sizes and implementing innovative ways to reach new readers. I look forward to reconnecting with the IndyStar and continuing our mission of delivering essential journalism to our community.”
