Discovery no longer starts with search

Posted

Your advertisers’ next customer may pick a competitor before ever typing a search.

People now find brands on TikTok, in Reddit threads, on Amazon and in AI-generated answers, and they bounce between all of them before buying. But many advertisers still measure success by rankings, click-through rates and cost per click, which only capture the last step.

Our latest blog, What Is the SSRA Framework: Understanding Modern Discovery, breaks discovery into four channels (Search, Social, Retail Media and AI) and shows how each one feeds the others.

The bottom line for publishers:

  • Get on the shortlist early. 70% of social media users go on to search for products they first saw on social. If an advertiser isn’t showing up in those feeds, they’re often out of the running before the search starts.
  • Show up where people buy. Fifty-seven percent of U.S. consumers start product searches on Amazon, and U.S. retail media spending is expected to reach $71.09 billion in 2026. Retail media ads appear in a retailer’s search results and product pages, right where the purchase happens, and retailers can report which ads led to sales. That’s no longer just for national brands.
  • Compete to become part of the answer. AI Overviews and assistants such as ChatGPT increasingly answer questions before users visit a website. Structured content, clear topical authority and consistent brand mentions across trusted sources help AI systems recognize when an advertiser is relevant.
