New automated content product: Hurricane updates

Posted

In partnership with U.S. local media group McClatchy, we have developed a Hurricane bot, which creates automated updates on data from the National Hurricane Center in the U.S. The bot was put to the test as Hurricane Ian made landfall at the end of September. (The image above is from its landfall over the Carolinas.)

The texts about Ian's progress were published by McClatchy's Miami (Florida) Herald and The Sun Herald (Biloxi, Mississippi). The updates gave readers a heads-up on the hurricane's progress. They were a complement to the on-the-ground reporting by local journalists.

The updates produced by the Hurricane bot include things like direction, speed, location, changes with current advisory (since last update), summary of watches and warnings, hazards affecting land, as well as quotes from the National Hurricane Center. Each text update carries a cone path image similar to the one shown in the photo above.

Our Hurricane product is now available in all U.S. states.
