States Newsroom announces content sharing partnerships with The Texas Tribune and seven other nonprofit newsrooms

States Newsroom, the nation’s leading network of state-based nonprofit news outlets, today announced a new partnership with The Texas Tribune, the nonprofit, nonpartisan public service newsroom that provides free news, data and events on Texas politics and policy, to host the live feed of its reporting on News from the States, States Newsroom’s comprehensive source for statehouse news from around the country.

In addition, States Newsroom has agreements with Connecticut Mirror, Honolulu Civil Beat, CommonWealth, Mississippi Today, VTDigger, Mountain State Spotlight and WyoFile to share the best of their state government coverage on News from the States.

With the addition of content from these widely respected nonprofit newsrooms, News from the States will provide a single source of thorough, nonpartisan state government coverage from 35 states. Last year, States Newsroom announced in The Washington Post that it plans to expand its own network to roughly 40 states by 2024 with content sharing partnerships like these covering the remaining states.

“We’re thrilled to work to highlight the work of these trusted nonprofit newsrooms that have effectively covered their state governments for years,” said Chris Fitzsimon, director and publisher of States Newsroom. “These partnerships will enhance News from the States and present an invaluable, searchable resource that allows readers to understand the themes and connections between the stories coming out of our state capitals.”

The content sharing agreements come shortly after Pew Research Center cited States Newsroom and other nonprofit newsrooms as key to filling the void in statehouse coverage left by staffing cuts at legacy media outlets. According to Pew, the overall percentage of reporters working for nonprofit newsrooms in the statehouse press corps has more than tripled since 2014 and now make up the largest portion of statehouse reporters in 10 states and the second largest in 17 states.

Every States Newsroom outlet is led by an editor with years of experience covering their state’s issues and has complete editorial independence over their coverage. States Newsroom has launched five outlets over the past year and recently announced an expansion into Indiana, Kentucky, South Carolina, South Dakota and Arkansas in the coming months.

State Newsroom, is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that is funded exclusively by the generous contributions of readers and philanthropists. States Newsroom is committed to supporting fact-based, non-partisan news to the public at no cost and ad-free.
