Stacker, a news agency offering a newswire that provides data-driven feature content to thousands of news outlets across the country, has appointed Micah Cohen to the newly created role of editor-in-chief. Cohen will oversee Stacker’s growing newsroom, leading content strategy and managing data reporting and editorial.

Cohen joins Stacker from FiveThirtyEight, where he oversaw editorial strategy and execution as managing editor. Cohen was also deputy editor and senior editor during his almost nine years at FiveThirtyEight. Cohen began his career as a news clerk at The New York Times and over the course of almost a decade worked his way up to staff editor. Cohen has extensive experience building world-class data journalism operations, and shares Stacker’s mission of empowering publishers by advancing sustainable models for journalism.

“Micah has helped set the gold standard for data journalism,” said Noah Greenberg, CEO, Stacker. “We are excited for him to elevate the quality journalism Stacker has always provided, and deepen our commitment to providing accessible content and empowering publishers.”

Cohen’s hire marks another milestone in Stacker’s significant growth since its launch in 2017. In 2021 alone, Stacker grew its average number of news sites that publish a given Stacker story by 500% from 50 to 300+, closed syndication partnerships with more than 15 media outlets, including Nexstar Media Group, Advance Digital, Boone Newspapers and Gray TV, grew its Studio business’ monthly revenue by 400% and doubled the size of its team. In 2022, Stacker made the commitment to double its newsroom, hiring 20 new journalists by September.

“Put simply: I’m thrilled!” Cohen said. “To have the chance to help a growing newsroom like Stacker tell ever more impactful stories is a privilege, and an opportunity I couldn’t pass up.”

Cohen added: “The world is awash in data — good data and bad data, fun data and vital data, biased data and revelatory data. And the media is still playing catch up as to what can and should be done with all that information. But the work Stacker has already done puts it in a unique position to push the industry forward — to bring data journalism that's relevant, illuminating and empowering to news producers and consumers who are desperate for rigorous, reliable stories.”
