NewsXtreme Cloud keeps Ogden's Standard Examiner online after ransomware attack

Posted

For over 128 years, the Standard Examiner, based out of Ogden, Utah, has served the residents of Weber, Davis, Box Elder, Morgan, Cache and Rich counties. More than 200,000 area residents read the Standard Examiner through print and digital.

The incident

In the early hours of Sept. 6, a cyberattack targeted the entire Standard Examiner prepress system and brought it to a standstill. The attack wiped out everything. Proofing, paging and templates — gone. Ben Brickman, operations director for Ogden Newspapers, quickly realized how serious of a situation had just unfolded.

Back online

NewsXtreme Cloud runs NewsXtreme prepress workflow software in Presteligence's secure, private cloud. Within that four-hour promise, John was able to get NX Cloud up and running for them so that page processing and production could continue.

Not only did this give the Standard Examiner a way to continue full production, but also a chance to test drive the benefits of an offsite cloud-based production workflow.

Additional benefits

Due to the amount of commercial work, the Standard Examiner also added the optional Customer commercial job interface. This web-based product allows outside customers to schedule jobs and upload files for production. Files are automatically passed over to the workflow for processing. The customer can view the ripped files and approve the pages for plate output.

NewsXtreme Cloud has Ink Optimization, built in PDF pre-flighting and support for the latest Adobe PDF standards. Ink-Miser automatically replaces areas of cyan, magenta and yellow with an equivalent amount of black ink, saving up to 30% of ink consumption. PDF Corrector provides advanced preflight inspection and reporting of common problems such as embedded fonts, color space usage, minimum text size and image resolution conflicts.

Moving forward

The Standard Examiner committed to moving to cloud full time. Within a matter of days, the NewsXtreme Workflow software proved it was up to the challenge of managing the daily paper and numerous commercial titles.

As the latest publisher to implement NewsXtreme Cloud, the Standard Examiner now has a workflow that is always updated and multiple processing lines with no single point of hardware failures. The paper also is protected against future virus threats.

Presteligence is proud to continue serving Ogden Newspapers and helping the company succeed now and into the future.
