'Shop Local' theme springboards section sales

Central Oklahoma Weeklies

Posted

As trends toward conscious consumerism and supporting independent community businesses continue to grow, Central Oklahoma Weeklies put the focus on supporting local businesses with a "Shop Local" themed special section. Here’s how they did it:

CREATE:
As part of their fourth-quarter sales strategy, Central Oklahoma Weeklies — the Mustang Times, Tuttle Times and Minco-Union City Times — ran a “Shop Local” guide ahead of the 2021 holiday season. The publisher used a Metro Fully Templated Special Section (TSS) title with articles and ad spots already in place to streamline the process and start selling, then ran the section as a print insert, as well as an e-edition that could be downloaded as a PDF.

SELL:
The Weeklies targeted a variety of local advertisers, from home improvement pros to retailers, realtors and restaurants. Features like local veteran ownership, community reputation and photos of business teams helped personalize ads and give them a local touch.

PROFIT:
Co-owner and -publisher Steve Coulter reports the themed section was successful in generating some extra revenue for his publication, with 17 ad spots sold in a variety of sizes.
