To complement the already robust client data security strategies we have in place for Adpoint and Amplio users, Lineup is introducing an additional layer of protection for critical system backups in the form of immutable storage.
Immutable storage technology ensures an object cannot be deleted or edited. This restriction is placed directly on the data and applies to anyone who tries to change the data: system administrators, storage vendors or attackers. They will have no ability to alter the data; it will be frozen and locked.
Additionally, Lineup’s immutable storage service saves these backups in a secure repository that is separate from our normal backups, where they can be retained safely. This means that even if the primary backup location has been compromised, immutable copies are still safe.
This setup means that critical data can be restored in the worst-case-scenario of a ransomware attack, or even if data has been deleted through human error or technical failure. Immutable storage also helps improve an organization’s compliance posture when it comes to proving data security measures.
As Rob Hesmondhalgh, chief information officer at Lineup, explained, immutable storage provides an extra line of defense for valuable operational data. “In the unlikely event that all our other layers of protection fail, we will have a copy of our customers’ data stored, unchanging and unchangeable, in a separate storage facility,” he said. “This technology can be considered the last and final protection that companies can use to mitigate the effects of any malicious behavior.”
“We use some of the latest and most sophisticated cyber security technology on the market. But we can’t simply rely on software to protect us from digital threats. Great cyber security starts with educating staff on what they need to do to keep systems safe,” he added.
“There’s no getting away from the fact that humans are the first, last and best line of defense against any malicious cyberattack. Every business needs to deliver adequate training to their staff, so they know how to spot vulnerabilities and flag up any attempts to compromise business data.”
“However, if every other line of security fails, our customers can rest assured that their Adpoint and/or Amplio environment will be fully backed up and ready to be retrieved in a secure, immutable storage service.”
Adding immutable storage to our customers’ packages will be straightforward and system performance will not be affected. Once the immutable backup service has been enabled, our team will send a copy of our customers’ backups to the immutable storage facility every night, in addition to completing all our existing standard backups. This immutable backup will contain a copy of the customer’s Adpoint or Amplio data, and an image of their application server. Each immutable backup will then be kept for a period of four weeks before being replaced with a new backup.
Existing customers are advised to contact their success manager for more information on adding our immutable storage facility to their Standard or Enhanced data recovery plan. Customers already signed onto our Advanced plan will be provided with this new service free of charge (but will be required to accept the terms of their new agreement).
