Legacy.com is thrilled to announce the much-anticipated launch of college memorial pages. Now, readers can discover obituaries for college friends, family and educators from any of 650 higher-education institutions nationwide.

The significant expansion allows Legacy to increase newspaper access to a highly motivated and diverse audience.

“First loves; first taste of freedom; beloved professors: people’s connection to their college and university run deep,” says Stopher Bartol, Legacy.com’s CEO. “We’re delighted to help readers remember these foundational experiences and honor the people they knew during such an important time in their lives.”

The current 10 most-visited college memorial pages are:

  1. University of Michigan
  2. Ohio State University
  3. Louisiana State University
  4. Harvard University
  5. University of North Carolina
  6. Pennsylvania State University
  7. University of Wisconsin
  8. University of Connecticut
  9. University of Texas
  10. University of Pennsylvania

The new college sites join Legacy’s growing network of interest-based memorial pages. By gathering obituaries from more than 15,000 local high schools and 36,000 U.S. cities and counties, the company aims to connect newspapers to a nexus of worldwide readers seeking hyper-local content.

Early results show exciting implications for newspapers. Of the 300,000 monthly visitors to a Legacy college or high school memorial page, more than 110,000 click through to view a notice on the newspaper’s cobranded obituary page. These highly engaged readers spend 5x longer reading obituary content and view 30% more pages. And they’re embedded directly into the place newspapers most want them to be: their local news website, generating 600,000 views of a newspaper obituary each month.

Exactly the result everyone at Legacy hoped for when launching the memorial page initiative.

“For more than 20 years, we’ve partnered with newspapers to reinforce their role as the community memorial gathering place,” Bartol says. “We’re investing heavily in strengthening that tradition.”

The company plans to make several market wide expansions, creating hundreds of new college and high school memorial pages by the end of 2022. Newspapers can request an addition now by contacting sales@legacy.com.
