COVID-19 Impact Shopping Study: 20,000 responses from across the country in three weeks

Posted

More than 20,000 responses have been received so far to the Pulse Research COVID-19 Impact Shopping Survey, and additional participation is being sought. This nationwide research effort captures the household shopping plans over the next three months. With this timely and unique intelligence, newspaper sales executives can act as true consultants to help local businesses, plus differentiate themselves as the only source of these customer-centric findings.

Here's what one publisher had to say about the study:

"We are worried about all of the local retail businesses and their ability to make it another month without business. This should help give them some hope that people do plan to buy their goods and services. It will also help us be that trusted adviser who is there to help them navigate through these unprecedented times. " — Caralyn Bess | regional publisher

Examples from approximately 200 shopping categories:

  • 10.9% plan to shop for home gardening services (+202.8%)
  • 22% plan to shop at a wine store (+51.7% from the annual study)
  • 16.4% plan to shop at a sporting goods store (+36.7%)
  • 4.4% seek a new remodeling contractor (+33.3%)
  • 21% plan to shop at a building supply/lumber yard (+48%)

"Unfortunately, every newspaper is dealing with catastrophic revenue losses. To help lessen the impact of COVID-19 and get back some of the lost advertising, Pulse launched the COVID-19 Shopping Impact Survey to provide newspapers and their local businesses with the next three-month shopping plans. The shopping results give ad reps a unique opportunity to assist businesses with encouraging information during these uncertain times,” says John W. Marling, president, Pulse Research.

The COVID-19 Impact Shopping Survey will continue to run during this crisis. All newspapers are encouraged to participate by promoting via every channel they have. Each will get a complimentary copy of the results along with a “how-to” guide.

Pulse is also offering training webinars to help understand the survey findings and how newspapers can leverage those locally. Pulse is offering the survey at no cost to newspapers. One respondent will be randomly selected to win $1,000.
