Newspaper carrier and her daughter deliver The Seattle Times — and free masks for coronavirus protection

In a periodic series called Stepping Up, highlighting moments of compassion, duty and community in uncertain times, The Seattle (Washington) Times highlighted the actions of Gina Singer, who with her daughter, have been making free masks for people along their newspaper delivery route who need a mask.

Singer, a 23-year distribution manager for the Kitsap Sun who also delivers the Tacoma News Tribune and The Seattle Times, has four employees tending to 1,000 customers in Belfair, Allyn, Union and Grapeview. She leaves the house at midnight, drives 20 minutes to Port Orchard to pick up the papers and then gets them to her carriers.

Her daughter, Brittany, who took over one of the routes two years ago, knew that many of her customers were older and might be in need of a mask to protect themselves.  She found a pattern online and inserted notes into the papers that she and her mom delivered.  If you need a mask, the note said, let us know how many you need and what color.  No charge.

The article in The Seattle Times notes that Brittany made and gave out 75 masks before they ran out of elastic. While they wait for more to be delivered, their waiting list has grown to 40 names.
